when kise thinks of his time at teikou, there are a few things that immediately come to mind.
-
first and foremost, of course, is basketball.
kise remembers his time at teikou in two different ways: before, and after he started playing basketball.
most people forget that, unlike the rest of them, he hadn't been living and breathing basketball until fairly recently. he had started school at teikou without any aim or purpose, bouncing between sports clubs. every day was the same; he'd play whatever sport they asked him to play, he'd get better at it, then he'd quit before they started to hate him for getting too good.
things came easily to kise - too easily - and the world had never been able to catch up.
then kise met a guy with a basketball, and he found something he didn't even know he was looking for. as kise watched him play, utterly transfixed by the boy's phenomenal skill with the ball, he remembers feeling awed, excited, and relieved, because finally, someone was better than him.
the next day, he joined the basketball club, and he hasn't stopped playing since.
-
(kise wonders sometimes, what could have - would have - happened if he had found basketball earlier)
-
naturally, that led to the most memorable thing about teikou: his old teammates.
'the generation of miracles', they called them, and kise remembers each of them fondly. aomine, who got kise hooked to basketball with his insurmountable talent and infectious love for the game. kuroko, who - despite his lack of talent - reached out and taught him humility with his quiet tenacity. midorima, quirky and serious, but always reliable with his infallible three-pointers and well-meant (if awkwardly executed) advice. murasakibara, essentially a giant brat with a cruel streak a mile wide, yet whose apathy kise understands (because being good at something didn't mean you had to like it, and talent was never fair). and akashi, with his infinite wisdom and boundless ambition, who showed kise how to win and not settle for anything less (to show no mercy).
they made a good team, and despite everything kise still holds them all dearly to his heart.
(they called them monsters too, but kise prefers not to think about that particular moniker.)
(they never taught him how to lose.)
passing mention of haizaki u g h (another thing haizaki shared with his teammates that kise didn't have, other than bball experience - SKITTLES SENPAI)
insert intense poetic fanboying of nijimura here how come its taking you so long to talk about skittles senpai when this entire fic spawned from skittles admiration goddammit
