why can't i be you
it's so easy for you to be
just what everyone wants to be
(this thing never stops haunting me -
you make everything look so easy)

on basketball, and everything that went wrong
yellow ranger pov aka everybody's biggest fanboy
i need to stop going off on tangents

when kise thinks of his time at teikou, there are a few things that immediately come to mind.

-

first and foremost, of course, is basketball.

kise remembers his time at teikou in two different ways: before, and after he started playing basketball.

most people forget that, unlike the rest of them, he hadn't been living and breathing basketball until fairly recently. he had started school at teikou without any aim or purpose, bouncing between sports clubs. every day was the same; he'd play whatever sport they asked him to play, he'd get better at it, then he'd quit before they started to hate him for getting too good.

things came easily to kise - too easily - and the world had never been able to catch up.

then kise met a guy with a basketball, and he found something he didn't even know he was looking for. as kise watched him play, utterly transfixed by the boy's phenomenal skill with the ball, he remembers feeling awed, excited, and relieved, because finally, someone was better than him.

the next day, he joined the basketball club, and he hasn't stopped playing since.

-

(kise wonders sometimes, what could have - would have - happened if he had found basketball earlier)

-

naturally, that led to the most memorable thing about teikou: his old teammates.

'the generation of miracles', they called them, and kise remembers each of them fondly. aomine, who got kise hooked to basketball with his insurmountable talent and infectious love for the game. kuroko, who - despite his lack of talent - reached out and taught him humility with his quiet tenacity. midorima, quirky and serious, but always reliable with his infallible three-pointers and well-meant (if awkwardly executed) advice. murasakibara, essentially a giant brat with a cruel streak a mile wide, yet whose apathy kise understands (because being good at something didn't mean you had to like it, and talent was never fair). and akashi, with his infinite wisdom and boundless ambition, who showed kise how to win and not settle for anything less (to show no mercy).

they made a good team, and despite everything kise still holds them all dearly to his heart.

(they called them monsters too, but kise prefers not to think about that particular moniker.)

(they never taught him how to lose.)

passing mention of haizaki u g h (another thing haizaki shared with his teammates that kise didn't have, other than bball experience - SKITTLES SENPAI)

insert intense poetic fanboying of nijimura here how come its taking you so long to talk about skittles senpai when this entire fic spawned from skittles admiration goddammit

Makoto’s eyes widen in surprise when he tells them about his promotion. Haruka, on the other hand, remains impassive as always, though he can spot a slight frown marring the young man’s usual stoic expression.

“If you ask me, this promotion’s long overdue.” Catching Nanase Haruka off guard is a notoriously difficult feat; Sasabe Goro allows himself a smug grin. “I might not be around to hold your hand anymore, but something tells me you two will manage just fine without me.”

“But who’s going to replace you as Senior Inspector?” asks Makoto, understandably worried. Though hardly rookies anymore, neither Makoto or Haruka qualify for Senior Inspector yet; Goro was going to nominate them for promotion in the next performance review, but now that he’s being promoted, that means he’s no longer their direct commanding officer and, well… a pity, really. He already had a speech planned out and everything.

“This is why you boys need to learn to read things people send you.” Goro chastises. Just in case, he checks his wrist-link to see if he really did send out that memo; yep, of course he did. “My replacement’s coming in next Wednesday.  I met him a few times before - nice guy, pretty efficient. I think he’s about your age, so you kids will get along swimmingly.”

Haruka merely raises a brow. Two years of being on the same team means that Goro has gotten pretty good at deciphering Haruka’s facial cues, and right now it could mean anything from ‘this is bullshit’ to ‘do you think I actually care?’ (Goro suspects it to be the latter).

“Well, last piece of advice: try not to give him so much shit on the first day.” Goro gives the two a friendly slap on the back each. “Now get your scrawny asses back to work. I have a meeting in 5.”

He watches the two reluctantly return to their desks. The office looks the same – his shitty desk in the corner, the tank of goldfish at the back, his two favorite juniors hunched over their own workspace. Who was he kidding? They'll be just fine without him.

Satisfied, Goro surveys the office one last time and turns around to leave.

Once upon a time, there was a rookie who dreamed of making the world a better place.

Six months was enough to kill those dreams.

-

When Mikoshiba announced that a new Inspector was assigned to their team, Rin honestly didn’t expect much.

Rookies are all a fucking pain in the ass to start with, still filled to the brim with the bullshit they feed you in the academy about maintaining justice and order and duty; all grand notions that, in reality, had no place in their line of work.

Privately, Rin thinks that the academy’s just a big sham since they never actually teach you anything remotely useful there - not anything you can use on the field anyways. It’s like no one ever thought of teaching those kids how to properly handle a Dominator, let alone how to shoot with it. And they're supposed to let these rookies run around chasing crime when they can't even tell the difference between an Enforcer and a latent criminal. What a comforting thought.

(It's up to veterans like him to pick up the slack, and Rin has very little tolerance for naivety and incompetent brats.)

So when he arrives at their newest crime scene, Rin isn’t very surprised to find a scrawny kid all but hiding behind Mikoshiba. The only visual confirmation of the kid’s identity is the blue Inspector’s jersey hanging on his shoulders, but even then it looks so grossly oversized on the kid, Rin has to bite back a laugh of disbelief.

“You’ve gotta be shitting me.” Rin fixes the new guy with a look as he approaches, none too pleased with how the brat cowers further behind Mikoshiba. He raises a brow. “That’s our new Inspector?”

Mikoshiba ignores Rin with practiced ease, rolling his eyes before he addresses the rest of the team. “Everyone, this is Nitori Aiichirou and he’s your new Inspector from today onwards. Which you would’ve already known if you bothered to read the personnel file I sent,” Rin returns Mikoshiba's jab with a bored look, and the man continues. “Nitori, this is everyone.”

“I look forward to working with all of you.” Nitori says with a nervous bow, and the other members start to introduce themselves. Rin automatically tunes their voices out, instead eyeing Nitori warily from the side, hands crossed in front of his chest. Judging from the bewildered look on the kid’s face, he’d say that his scrutiny hasn’t gone unnoticed. Probably a good thing, Rin decides, that NItori isn't completely oblivious to his surroundings.

At Mikoshiba’s pointed glare, Rin tries to school his face into something less menacing, reluctantly extending a hand out in greeting. “Matsuoka Rin, Inspector. Try not to fuck up today.”

If he didn't know any better he'd say that Nitori looks positively starstruck, though he's got a surprisingly firm grip. “Matsuoka-san, I won’t let you down today. I’ve heard so much about you from when you were in Division 2—"

“Save it.” Irritated, Rin cuts him off with a scowl, wrenching his hand out from the kid’s grip to turn to Mikoshiba. “Start the mission briefing.”

honey, baby, sweetie, darling
hey, you and i, we're gonna have a love affair
it's not gonna work but somewhere in the middle
(my god, we tried)

This is a game and these are the rules: we pretend that we are strangers by day and lovers by night; we pretend that this means nothing more than a casual fuck and that there is nothing beyond that; we pretend that we don’t feel anything between us but the delicious friction of our skin and simple pain-laced pleasure; we pretend not to care; we pretend that we don’t love each other –

And the first person to lose, wins.
